Who We Are

We are a registered NGO with an advisory board and director that share a passion for the well being of Bonaire and the environment.

Advisory Board

Carolyn Caporusso

As a PADI Course Director and long-time dive industry professional, Carolyn Caporusso made it her life’s work to share her love of the ocean via education, awareness and action. She has been organizing Project AWARE Dive Against Debris underwater clean up dives on Bonaire for the past 10 years. When she realized that removing debris from underwater wasn’t enough, she initiated the Debris Free Bonaire program in 2012 to encourage visitors and residents to help remove plastic debris from the eastern shoreline of Bonaire. In 2018, she became the Project Coordinator for Clean Coast Bonaire, a citizen science project that involves not only cleaning beaches but collecting data along with the marine litter. It’s no big surprise that it’s mostly plastic, so she’s bringing her enthusiasm to the board of A Plastic Free Bonaire to help turn back the tide of plastic and protect the ocean for future generations.

Director

Michael LaFortune

In 2003 Michael came to Bonaire because 1/3 of the Caribbean island was a designated national park and its surrounding reefs were a marine park. Supporting conservation has always been of utmost importance to Michael. In the past 15 years he has worked various positions in the dive industry on Bonaire. As director of a local company in 2010 he believes that we should all do something to give back to our community.
